big ideas

Grade 8

Math 8 mainly focuses on strengthening numeracy skills and multiple step equations students should also be able to discuss there ideas and explain there thought process behind there work .a big area of math 8 is word questions and ensuring students can understand math on a english level . another main skill students learn  is how to calculate area, circumference ,volume , perimeter ,etc . these help students understand the real world and helps them to be able to use there skills in other classes . math 8 also focuses on financial literacy and knowing what would be the best buy . math 8 is the foundation for all other math levels if you do not have a good understanding of math 8 you will struggle in other courses . lastly math 8 students should be able to understand patterns and be able to define and understand them as-well as the  understanding of shapes .Finally math is a key role in students learning and its a vital skill that all  students need to excel in not only school but life and in the future ,work places .

A big part of math is being able to explain your thinking behind your work . math is not only about numbers . many math teachers assign multiple oral projects for math. this  helps students explain and express there learning .  A big project that math 8 students participate in is the boat challenge  . Students are asked to make a paper boat as the base but they can add anything onto it to reinforce it . after they are asked to calculate how far the boat can travel with a blow drier . this project is a good way to get students to participate and engage with others. At the end of the project students present the videio to there class mates and discuss what they found how and how they got that information

talking about your work

Homework

Math is a very important subject in students learning . but it is also a very difficult subject for some students . thats why homework is a daily thing. students should be dedicating time after school everyday to ensure that they can keep up with everyone else . palmer teachers are very helpful so if you need help with anything you can ask the teachers and they will gladly help you. Math is not something that yyou understand right away mathe needs practice and time . students who are dedicated and spend time making sure they are spending time wisely are the studenst that excel in class. palmer provides a support network for studenst who need that extra help . palmer provides studenst tutors because most tutors are more expensive these tutors are way cheaper and are still helpfull . although some times in class you might feel like you eed more help and you cnat ask your teacher there are peer tutors . these are studenst who spend a block everyday making sure stemds and teachers get the help they need

logic and reasoning

Students in math 8 should be able to use logic and reasoning behind there answers math is not only about getting a big number if it does not make sense its most likely not correct. Thats why students should be able to find an answer are find how that answer fits in the equation. math is all about logic ,you should be able to analyze information explain reason etc .Another big part of math 8 is analyzing patterns and making predictions and explaining and drawing conclusions with reasoning.lastly students should learn how to estimate reasonably and if they see a pattern or number they can roughly estimate with accuracy

Students should be able to understand designs of shapes and 3d models . students should be able to be able to calculate lengths and find missing sides . this also tie in to pythagorean theorem which is a big part of math 8 . pythagorean theorem is used when you are trying to figure out a unknown side of a triangle . math 8 is not only about numbers . Students should be able to understand shapes on a higher understand and be able to comprehend the model and sizes and dimensions .  lastly students should be able to understand fractions on a more difficult level . if there are fractions in a equation with variables students should be able to know how to covert that fraction to a whole number  . All of these tools students learn is what helps them grow and build themselves in future math classes . Math is a foundation for other subjects not only about numbers but portions and more.
